We all enjoy food and need it. Food, however, is one of the biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions. This is why we invite you to join Fazer in making concrete actions to reduce the carbon footprint of food.
We have gathered some examples of what we as a company do to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and how your choices can reduce your negative impact on the environment. The choices we both make have a global impact.
What Fazer does
In the bakery and confectionery business and Fazer Mills, our objective is to cut energy consumption by 20 per cent per product by 2020. In Finland and Sweden, the share of renewable energy is 100 per cent of the electricity used. Fazer Food Services aims to increase the share of vegetables in its offering, use seasonal ingredients and reduce the amount of food waste. On average, the carbon emissions of plant-based food are smaller than those of meat and dairy products. By favouring seasonal ingredients, it is possible to reduce the climate impact of the food served in Fazer’s restaurants.
What you can do
- One of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to avoid wasting food.
- Choose a packaging size that contains the amount you need.
- On average, the carbon footprint of plant-based food is smaller than that of meat and dairy products. However, it is not necessary to avoid any food completely. What matters is the ratio of the different ingredients. It is recommendable, for example, to eat more vegetables, pay attention to the amount of meat in your diet and select seasonal vegetables, when possible.
- We encourage you to select products with responsible packaging helping you to recycle and reuse the material. At least 99 per cent of Fazer’s packaging materials can be recycled, refilled or used in energy production.
