Food loss and waste

Food loss and waste reduction is one of the most effective ways to reduce food's environmental impact. At Fazer, we aspire to cut food waste significantly by 2030.

The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that a third of all food is lost or goes to waste. Worse still, all these food losses and waste has a tremendous negative impact on the environment.  

Since food losses and waste has a massive influence on the climate and environment, so reducing food waste in all stages of production is vital to us. We aim to be responsible and help the world and people. As a significant Nordic food company, we believe our actions can make a difference.  

Since producing food is costly, losing and wasting food is expensive. Reducing food losses and waste will reduce the food industry's impact on climate and cut production costs, benefiting producers and consumers. 

Food waste occurs throughout the production cycle, from farm to table.  

Food waste occurs at all stages of food production. Thus, we can reduce it in many ways and stages. We can achieve several small and big changes by paying attention to the entire production chain – from farm to table. Over time the savings will accumulate. 

We need to know how food is lost or wasted to make these improvements. When we know that we can plan and act accordingly. 

Change takes time and effort. But we have already taken a wide range of measures to resuce food waste and loss in our factories, mills, and bakeries. We have made plans on how to use side streams more efficiently in a circular economy. In addition, our employees are trained to prevent food waste. 

We are on the right path: In 2020, we recycled 98.5% of our production waste. 

Food loss and waste is a shared concern, and we can all help. Fazer is committed to doing our part in achieving this goal.
