The Science Based Targets
We commit to limiting global warming to 1.5°C
Reducing emissions to mitigate climate change has always been part of our sustainability agenda. As the science-based targets have become the globally recognized standard for companies aiming to reduce carbon emissions, the commitment to the SBTi is a natural continuation of our climate work.
The new climate targets align with the Paris Agreement targets to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Fazer’s ambitious emission reduction targets include our operations and our value chain.
- reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% by 2030 from 2020 levels
- reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from 2020 levels
- engage 53% of suppliers by spending on purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution to commit to science-based targets
How we will reduce our emissions
After taking a close look at our operations, with an eye on energy consumption, we know how to reduce our carbon emissions by 2030.
We have improved our production units’ energy efficiency and switched to green electricity. In Finland, Sweden, and Latvia, 100% of the purchased electricity is from fossil-free sources. At the Group level, the share was 86% in 2020.
We will also invest in bio-heating facilities to reach our emission reduction targets.
According to the recently updated energy and climate roadmap, gradually replacing natural gas with biogas is the next step. Moreover, Fazer is investing in heat recovery.
Besides improving energy efficiency and heat recovery we will, among other things, enhance ventilation and air conditioning or switching to energy-saving lighting. We will also invest in bio-heating facilities to reach our emission reduction targets. Fazer reports its progress on climate actions annually.
What is SBTi?
The Science Based Targets initiative is a cooperation between United Nations Global Compact, World Resource Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The initiative aims to enable businesses to take swift climate action by setting ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Targets adopted by companies are considered science-based if they are in line with the Paris Agreement, pursuing to keep global temperature increase below 2°C above pre-industrial levels with further efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
