Fazer is committed to responsible forestry in purchasing raw materials for our products. Our biggest impact in responsible forestry is in supply chains of cocoa, palm oil, soy and fibre-based packaging materials. We aim to halt deforestation caused by our actions.

Fazer’s sustainability approach is aligned with our mission: Food with a purpose. We want to do good for people and the planet, and we have defined specific targets and sustainability topics that help us to do that. Fazer has set 2030 as a goal to have 100% sustainably sourced materials and services.

Deforestation is defined as permanent conversion of forests and woodlands to other land uses such as crops, roads, settlements, mining or grazing land. Deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems is a major cause of climate change and species extinction. Forests serve as habitats for animal and plant species and play a key role in providing water and preventing flooding and erosion. Deforestation also threatens the livelihoods of people that rely on forests for food and economic activity. Forests have markable role in carbon sequestration and as carbon storage.

Fazer is committed to responsible forestry in purchasing raw materials for our products. Our biggest impact in forestry is related to the supply chains of tropical raw materials cocoa, palm oil and soy (direct and indirect consumption).
We will continuously monitor other raw materials regarding their possible contribution to deforestation and widen our actions when needed.

Fazer has separate sustainability requirements and commitments for raw materials that may contribute to deforestation. We require actions against deforestation from our suppliers. We have that as a basic requirement for all suppliers as part of our Supplier Code of Conduct. Actions for responsible forestation are in the core of the certification programmes that we source our cocoa and palm oil from.

Cocoa

100 % of the cocoa we use comes from responsible sources. We source traceable cocoa through farmer programmes in Ecuador, Nigeria and Ivory Coast and also cocoa from Cocoa Horizons program. Fazer is improving cocoa traceability. All cocoa sourced under the three farmer programs is traceable to farm level.  “And we’ve gone even further. To prevent deforestation, the farms have been GPS-mapped to ensure they are not located in rainforests or buffer zones,” says Kaisa Mattson, Director, Sustainable Sourcing & Human Rights from Fazer Group Procurement.

The rest of the cocoa we source is UTZ, Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade Cocoa Programme certified cocoa.

Palm oil

All palm oil used by Fazer is certified sustainable palm oil. Fazer is committed to use only RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified palm oil. Our ambition is to use only Segregated palm oil by 2024. This statement covers entire Fazer Group including all countries and product categories https://www.fazergroup.com/sustainability/fair-value-chain/sustainably-sourced/responsible-sourcing-of-palm-oil/

Soy

Fazer is committed to using only sustainable certified soy.  Fazer’s commitment to certified soy covers all Fazer’s businesses. All the soy used directly or indirectly in the value chain will meet the requirements set by the RTRS (The Roundtable on Responsible Soy) or ProTerra.

Fibre-based packaging materials is also recognised as a potential contributor to deforestation, and we are preparing actions and commitments in that area as well.
