How the responsibility is verified

To verify the sustainability and traceability of our cocoa sourcing, we use third-party auditors.

We source cocoa through our farmer programmes in Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Nigeria, enabling Fazer to purchase cocoa fulfilling the criteria for responsible production.

In our programmes, everything we source is traceable and segregated. The cocoa purchased from a certified farm is physically separated from non-certified ingredients throughout the supply chain. We use SCS Global Services to audit the sourcing of our programmes.

We also source cocoa from farmers participating in Cocoa Horizons’s program, audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and through UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade Cocoa Programme, which use a “mass balance” sourcing. “Mass balance” means that we use a mix of certified and non-certified cocoa. We track certified volumes so that for every tonne of cocoa we use, we pay a premium to cocoa farmers to support certified cocoa farmers.

Briefly, we source cocoa from farmers in our own third-party audited farmer programmes and from conscientiously chosen and third-party audited suppliers.
