Grain vision commitment

Oats_940x370_Main.jpg

Fazer is working towards making our farming more environmentally friendly. As one of the largest buyers of flour and consumer of grain in the Baltic region, it is our duty to do better for the planet and its people.

What are our Sustainable Farming Principles about?

  • Developing more sustainable grain farming in cooperation with the value chain.
  • Reducing eutrophication, protecting biodiversity, and minimising the use of chemicals.
  • Supporting the productivity of grain farming, as well as the effective use of resources, while also maintaining the cultivability of soil in the long term.
  • Committing to furthering stewardship of the Baltic Sea.

Fazer’s objectives

Sustainable grain farming is an important part of Fazer’s sustainability work. By 2025, we project that all grain used by Fazer in consumer goods in Finland and Sweden will fulfil the sustainable grain farming principles.

Sustainable Farming Principles

The principles of sustainable farming have been created in cooperation with Finnish and Swedish stakeholders. Diverse groups such as farmers, producers' associations, and environmental organisations have participated in the creation of these principles.

  1. Measure soil nutrient balance every five years
  2. Prepare an annual crop plan
  3. Prepare a five-year crop rotation plan to minimise eutrophication and the use of pesticides
  4. Perform a soil analysis every five years
  5. Adopt Precision Farming
  6. Use catch crops, winter crops, or cultivate in the spring
  7. Use fertilizer enabling recirculation of nutrients without harming substances
  8. Leave unfarmed/unsprayed areas with diverse vegetation
  9. Use Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  10. Minimise the use of straw-shortening agents.
